Who is AEO?

Last Wednesday, my study tour class and I had the opportunity to explore the American Eagle Outfitters Design Headquarters here in New York City. Although the main campus resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, all product development and design occurs right here in the big apple.

It makes sense, really- to have the design sector of the company be placed in a city where inspiration is abundant!

This trip was more than just an experience for the sights… we also got to see who American Eagle Outfitters really is…

Who are They?

Known as American Eagle Outfitters, AEO has always been known for their denim and more casual dressings. But, AEO is more than just that…

Aerie, Todd Snyder, and Unsubscribed- all brands that fall under the AEO umbrella! With a versatile selection, AEO covers all facets of the industry with a wide range of prices.

Aerie

With a hard focus on athleisure and undergarments, Aerie has been surging ahead in the fashion industry. In fact, their success is giving no signs of stopping… Gaining a lot of fame in the time of the pandemic a few years ago, the brand has only continued to grow and popularize.

Known for their soft and comfortable fabrics, Aerie is the “it girl” brand of AEO.

Todd Snyder

Although American Eagle had and continues to have a men’s portion of the brand, Todd Snyder is here to provide a more upscale men’s selection. This brand has expanded AEO greatly as it even dips into the suiting sector of the fashion industry- my favorite!

Unsubscribed

A brand new to me, Unsubscribed is the newest portion of AEO (and my new favorite…). Releasing only two collections a year, Unsubscribed focuses on the slow fashion movement. Their pieces are higher priced, but offer a more timeless, minimalist, and versatile selection of merchandise.

With an intense focus on materials used in the clothing, Unsubscribed is dedicating their brand to being more responsible within the AEO umbrella.

Design Inspiration

A perfect Empire State Building view from AEO’s skylight!

As I previously mentioned, with the Design HQ residing here, it’s no surprise that inspiration is everywhere! Being in the office with the employees, we decided to ask them ourselves!

Here’s what we found:

  1. Vintage

As trends continue to come and go, reflecting times past as we surge into the future, vintage will always be a place to turn to. Silhouettes are upcycled and history has been known to inspire in one way or another whether it’s by making a change, or building onto something.

  1. Streetwear

Having immersed myself in the New York City culture this semester, always looking up and around at all that I pass, it’s no secret that streetwear is diverse and a sight to see here. You could never be bored sitting on a street corner. Trends stare you right in the face, while outside of the box thinkers provide a little spice to the streets.

Leaving Thoughts

Seeing the inner workings of a well-known corporation is nothing short of absolutely amazing and eye-opening. Leaving this trip, I have a newfound appreciation and respect for all of these companies. There was an essence of kindness and open mindedness that filled the building! Seeing them branching out and creating Unsubscribed was by far my favorite part- as we all know, I always love uncovering a new, conscious brand!
